PTE or the Pearson Test of English is an English language test for candidates who wants to apply to universities or countries abroad where English is the native language. PTE academic test is the test undertaken by students who aspire to study overseas. This test judges the English language skills of a candidate and convinces university officials of his proficiency over the language. The PTE has 4 sections: reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Who takes the PTE Exam?
There are 3 types of PTE exam:
PTE Academic, PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Home.
What is the PTE Academic Exam?
The PTE Academic exam is undertaken by students who wish to secure a seat at an overseas university. The PTE Academic Exam is conducted throughout the year and the PTE scores are valid for 2 years. The exam comprises 4 sections: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
What is the PTE Academic UKVI?
The PTE Academic UKVI is a Secure English Language Test (SELT) approved by the UK Home Office for obtaining all UK visas that needs a 4 skill language test. The PTE Academic UKVI is for candidates who want to work, study, or live in the UK.
What is the PTE Home?
The PTE Home is an English language test that is accepted by the UK Home Office particularly for family and work visas. The PTE Home English test is divided into:
- PTE Home A1,
- PTE Home A2 and
- PTE Home B1 English tests.
Who organises PTE?
PTE is conducted by the Pearson PLC Group. The PTE exam fee is 14,700. The PTE is a two- hour long test that and it aims to judge PTE candidates on day to day English instead of standard English.
PTE scores are accepted in over 50 countries including the USA, the UK, Australia, Canada etc. This test is conducted in around 300 test centres throughout the world. The PTE score is also required for Australian visas and New Zealand too.
PTE scores are valid for 2 years from the date you appear for the exam. You can take the PTE test as many times as you can. But need to wait for the results of the previous test.
PTE Syllabus
PTE Academic is divided into 4 sections:
PTE Reading, PTE Listening, PTE Speaking, and PTE Writing.

PTE Speaking and Writing Section
The PTE speaking and writing section has many sub sections with a time frame of 54-67 minutes. The different sub sections are:
PTE Read aloud- you have to prepare a prompt in about 60 words and then read it aloud
Repeat Sentence: you have to repeat a sentence after a 3-9 seconds audio recording
Describe image: you have to describe an image within 40 seconds
Re-tell lecture: candidates will be played an audio or video recording of 90 seconds and asked to re tell in 40 seconds
Answer short question: you have to respond to a question within the shortest span of time in own words
Summarize written text: read 300 worded text and summarize it in 1 sentence
Essay: an essay of 200- 300 words should be written in this section.
PTE Reading Section
The PTE reading section is 30 minutes long. It has the following sub sections:
PTE reading and writing fill in the blanks: a questionnaire with blanks is given
Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer: you have to select more than one appropriate answer, this section has negative marking
Re-order paragraphs: appropriate placing of random texts
Reading fill in the blanks: select accurate answer from drop down boxes

PTE Listening
In the PTE listening section, some audio/video clips are played once. Therefore they should be listened to carefully.
- Summarize Spoken Text: you have to answer a recording in a written text
- Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers: select more than one relevant answers
- Fill in the Blanks: fill in the missing words after listening to transcripts
- Highlight Correct Summary: choose the most appropriate paragraph after listening to an audio recording

PTE Exam Preparation Tips

Here are some PTE exam day tips for a smooth PTE experience.
- Satisfy your hunger pangs with a light breakfast. Also carry some light food with you to the exam centre.
- Ensure you carry all your important documents like identity cards, passport etc.
- Reach the exam centre in time to avoid last minute hassle
- Keep your belongings like phones etc on lockers provided by the centre.
- A break of 10 minutes will be given to the test takers.
Exam Timing
The total duration of the PTE is 2 hours. The PTE General takes 3 hours to conclude. This includes a 10 minutes break after the first two sections which are optional. It is better not to take the break. Any extra time taken beyond 10 minutes will be deducted in section 3.

PTE General
PTE General Exam Pattern includes two sections:
- a written section
- a spoken interview
The PTE General is for candidates speak other languages and are learners of the English language. Candidates who want to study , settle or work overseas can take the PTE General. The exam scores are accepted by universities around the globe. The PTE Scores are also accepted by the non English Speaking European countries. This test is actually a proof of your proficiency in the command over the English language.
The PTE test is not computer based. It is in two sections: an interview and a written test. The written paper also includes reading, listening. There are six levels to the test based on the CEFR levels. The duration of the PTE General is 3 hours.
The PTE General is a theme based test to assess a candidate’s communication skills. The overall test comprises six levels, which are in link to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF).
Candidates can register for the PTE General test online through the Edexcel Online process. The results of the test are always valid and can be used anytime for your study abroad plans. You are not required to retake PTE.

There are no passing scores in the PTE exam. A PTE score range of 50 to 63 is considered high. A score range of 65 -75 is a actually a desirable score and increases the chances of getting admitted to the best universities in the world.
How to get PTE Scores?
Students can get their PTE scores through their email within 5 days of the test taken. They will be notified about the availability of their PTE scores. Upon receiving the notification, students can log in to their Pearson VUE account to access their scores. A student can retake PTE within a gap of 5 days.
How to Send PTE Scores?
Students who want to send their PTE scores to universities must know that universities do not accept PTE score reports in PDF or paper formats. To send across the PTE score card, Please follow the below mentioned steps to send your PTE score cards to your selected universities:
- Go to the official PTE website and log in to your account
- Visit the ‘Activity Section’ and select ‘Select Score’
- Type the name of your selected university and select ‘search’
- Chose ‘recipient’ and click on ‘select programs’
- Click on Next and select ‘submit order’
PTE Slot Booking
The first step in registering your PTE exam would be to acquire a valid passport. Post getting a passport you will be required to logging in on the official PTE website and creating an account. Please follow the below mentioned steps for a better understanding of the PTE registration process.
- Go to the official PTE Academic website
- Create an account by filling your personal details
- After completing the PTE registration process you will receive an email within 48 hours from Pearson
- Search your nearest PTE centre, select your time and date to book a slot for your exam.

- Pay the PTE Exam Fee of 15,900 Indian rupees and book your PTE exam
PTE Exam Fee
The PTE Academic exam fee in INR 15,900. Candidates will have to pay a late booking fee if PTE booking is done within 48 hours of the test date.

Cancellation of PTE:
Cancellation of PTE due to any reason should be done 14 days before the test date
Candidates will receive a full refund if they cancel their PTE exam before 14 days of their booked PTE exam
Candidates who want to cancel their PTE exam atleast before 7 days of the exam will receive a refund of 50% of the test fee.
No refund whatsoever will be given to students who cancel their exam less than 7 days before their booked exam date.
During suspension of PTE exam candidates will be notified through email about it.
Candidates who have paid via debit or credit cards will receive refund automatically
Candidates will be able to book an alternative appointment through a PTE voucher code if he had used the same to book the earlier suspended exam( PTE voucher code can be taken from the official PTE website )
Rescheduling PTE Exam
PTE rescheduling can be done 14 days before the test date.
PTE candidates need to sign in to their accounts and choose ‘cancel’ or ‘reschedule’ option.
If rescheduling PTE is done before 14 days of the booked test date, candidates will not have to pay anything
If it is done less than 14 days but 7 days before the test date, 50% of the PTE test fee will be charged
If candidates miss the PTE exam no refund will be issued.
Mode of Payment
PTE exam fee payment can be done through Visa, MasterCard, and American Express Credit Cards.
PTE Academic Exam Eligibility
To take the PTE Academic test, the candidate must be at least 16 years of age. The PTE body has not set any educational criteria in order to take the PTE.
PTE Scholarships
Students can apply for Scholarships on the official website of every college. They can also take education loans from financial institutions for studying abroad.
PTE Do’s and Don’ts:
- Do have a good night sleep the night before the exam date.
- Be in the exam center before 30 minutes with a valid ID proof.
- You will be provided with erasable note board booklet. So use it to take any notes if required for any question type.
- Do check the headphones. Any problem with the headphones, let the member of the staff know beforehand so that you may not face the problem when you begin the test or in between the test. As the test time will not be paused because of these reasons.
- Under any circumstances, if you face any software or hardware glitches, let the member of the staff know. They will resolve the issue.
- Before you proceed to the next question, make sure the answer is right. Rest of them is wrong. Be careful with multiple choice, multiple answers (Reading), multiple choice, multiple answers (Listening) and High light incorrect words (Listening) as these three questions have partial credit.
- Strictly follow the rules, regulations and the instructions. Any breach of these – you will be mentioned as “No Show”.
- Don’t carry any personal items such as mobiles, pagers etc as these are not allowed inside the exam hall. If you still want to carry these – you can give them to one of the staff members to store in a safe place. But do collect all your belongings once you are done with the test.
- If you remain silent for 3 seconds in speaking test – the microphone will close.
- Don’t write everything in CAPITAL LETTERS. But do mention capital letters whenever it is needed.
- Don’t click the previous button as you cannot navigate back to check the answers or attempt it later. Make sure you are confident with your answers before you hit the Next button.
